About Us

How can counselling help?

Counselling is one way for people who are having a problem with gambling, which they cannot control, cannot handle or simply cannot cope with to seek help. Talking often helps in these circumstances. Counsellors are professionals trained in behavioural and social sciences, and financial matters.

Counselling can help to alleviate emotional pain and suffering. It can teach you new skills, which can be used to deal with the gambling problem and other associated problems. Counselling can help you to improve your communication skills and increase your self-esteem. It can be a starting point for recovery from gambling, and can facilitate the change process needed for recovery. It can save a relationship. It can give you hope that there is a better way to live, a way out.

Counselling can assist you to explore ways of changing your behaviours. What counselling cannot do is change you. That is something you must do. You can take the skills and ideas initiated in counselling and put them into practice in your life. Counselling can help if you put into practice what you have explored/learned.

Counselling is not always easy, but neither is living with a gambling problem. For many, talking to a counsellor helps them gain a greater understanding of their situation.

Our counsellors are supportive and respectful of your need for privacy. They are interested in how you see your situation and what sort of help you think you might need. They will help you set goals for a better future.

Awareness, Education and Training Opportunities

For everyone – including you.

If you work, play or live with people, then you would benefit personally from a free training, information or awareness session. All Gambling Help Services offer information, liaison, and awareness sessions, education and training for individuals and groups in the general community, gaming industry, and the health and welfare sectors.

1. Community information and awareness – for groups, clubs, general public

2. Industry training, information and liaison – for venues

3. Education and training workshop - Allied Health Professionals

1. Community information and Awareness

Problem gambling causes significant problems within our community. For every 10 000 people, 300 have significant difficulties with gambling behaviour. This is someone's relative, friend, or work mate. It is estimated that out of the 300 people with problem gambling, 1500 – 3000 people will be negatively impacted. The issues facing them include business difficulties, relationship breakdowns, personal issues, and financial devastation.

Gambling Help Counsellors hear stories every day from loved ones who “had no idea what was going on”, “thought the gambling had stopped”, or “didn't realise how much the gambling had spiralled out of control”. Businesses have been stripped of tens of thousands of dollars, families who have lost their homes, their savings, and most importantly their trust.

Organising an information session with a gambling help service will provide you with factual information about the odds of winning with gambling, some of the signs that a persons gambling has become problematic, and some strategies on how to deal with problem gambling if it impacts on you personally. An information session will also cover an overview of what happens in counselling, and provide you with the opportunity to ask questions. The Gambling Help Service will organise a workshop for any group of three or more people. The better informed and more aware we are, the sooner we can intervene and assist people affected by problem gambling.

2. Industry, Training, Information and Liaison

Gambling Help staff liaise with gaming venues on a regular basis to develop and maintain links for referral options. This liaison is done in accordance with the Responsible Gambling Code of Practice, and will offer support to venues around issues of self exclusions.

Other services provided to gaming venues include:

  • Participation in the Responsible Service of Gambling Training;
  • Participation in the Code of Practice Training;
  • Support and information for staff and/or patron enquiries;
  • Other relevant referral options; and
  • Debriefing and support to gaming venue staff.
  • If you are a CLO or manager of a gaming venue, you can contact your local Gambling Help Service. (See ******) A phone number of your local Gambling Help Service can also be found on the back of the ‘ Are you Gambling With More than Your Money' Cards.

3. Education and Training workshops

The Gambling Help Service will provide training sessions to health and welfare workers including (but not limited to) General Practitioners, Medical Officers, Nurses, psychologists, social workers, counsellors, youth workers, allied health workers, and support staff working with people in the community sector.

The training session will be tailored to meet the particular needs of each group, and can vary in duration depending on participant and Gambling Help staff availability. Longer sessions are particularly successful in rural or remote areas, though they have been popular in the cities as well.

The workshops will provide you with resources and information on how to identify, approach and work with the issue of problem gambling. Information provided in the session can include:
